Computer Viruses Spreading Through Facebook

In between clients, Tahireh Sharifaie sits at the computer inside her Derby hair salon. She clicks away at Facebook, looking at pictures of friends, keeping tabs on relatives in her native country of Iran, or checking her daily horoscope.

“If I’m not on Facebook I feel like I’m bored,” she says laughingly.

Recently her giggles turned to grumbles when her computer was infected with a virus.

“Facebook is renowned for spreading viruses,” says computer expert Bill Ramsey. The owner of The Bill Guy Technology Solutions. In recent months, Ramsey has done an unusually high volume of virus repair work. Most of it is the result of customers picking up dangerous spyware or viruses through links on Facebook. Links that say “You must see this video” or “I can’t believe you did this” are virtually guaranteed to wreck your computer.

Ramsey says one particularly nasty bug disable will actually disable your whole system, except for one website. The goal is to trick you into buying phony anti-virus software.

“You wouldn’t believe the number of people that pay this $40. Multiple times even because they get it back. Well it never goes away. This doesn’t fix the problem. It is the problem,” he says.

The bug will make it look like your computer is dumping files from its hard drive. Really it’s just a web page designed to scare you. If you panic and start clicking the screen, you will infect the system. Instead, Ramsey recommends pressing ALT-F4 repeatedly until the screen is clear. Then, dump your temporary internet files, run a virus scan, and reboot.

If that virus gets on your computer it will likely mean a major repair or a full restoration of your operating system.

Other recommendations from Ramsey:

Be careful what you click on. Just because someone posts a link doesn’t mean you are obligated to click on it.

Infected links will often appear to come from your Facebook “friends” and will contain generic language such as “You must see this video!” or “I can’t believe you did this!”.

Don’t run two antivirus programs at the same time. They will work against each other and make your computer vulnerable.

If you do get a Facebook virus, change your Facebook account password immediately. It may have been compromised by the people behind the virus.

Lenovo says business will focus on mobile Internet

Lenovo Group expects wireless Internet products to account for up to 80 percent of its sales within five years as it pursues expansion in faster-growing emerging markets, CEO Yang Yuanqing said Friday.

Lenovo, the world’s fourth-largest personal computer maker, jumped into the mobile Internet market in January with the unveiling of a smart phone and two Web-linked portable computers.

“Mobile Internet is very important,” Yang said in an interview. “Even today, notebook sales already are higher than desktops. Mobile Internet products are going to be 70 to 80 percent of our sales … within three to five years.”

Yang said Lenovo plans this year to focus on promoting mobile Internet and sales in emerging economies in Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

AdvertisingLenovo, based in Beijing and Morrisville, North Carolina, was hit hard by the global crisis, which prompted its core corporate customers to slash spending. It suffered three losing quarters before rebounding to a profit in the second half of last year.

Yang said Lenovo’s longer-term strategy, dubbed “protect and attack,” calls for building up its dominant presence in China. The country accounts for nearly half of Lenovo’s global sales but it faces competition from industry leaders Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc., which are creating products tailored to Chinese customers.

In the latest quarter, Lenovo said sales in India and other emerging markets rose 52 percent over a year earlier, far ahead of the 13 percent sales growth reported for the United States and Western Europe.

Lenovo, which acquired IBM Corp.’s PC unit in 2005, says its global market share last year rose to 9 percent, its highest level to date.

Yang said Lenovo has no plans for foreign acquisitions but is ready to look at any deals that fit its strategic plans.

Corporate spending on computers has yet to rebound but companies are expected to step up purchasing in the second half of this year, Yang said. He said he could not foresee when global PC sales might recover to pre-crisis levels.

“I’m not an economist,” he said. “Even for economists, it’s difficult to forecast.”

Lian Li Introduces Exotic Spider PC Case

The folks at Fudzilla spied a crazy new exotic case from Taiwanese computer case giant Lian Li last week at the CeBIT trade show in Germany. The case has sort of a spidery look too it and stands proudly on four legs. As you can see, it has a majority of its components exposed to the open air. This isn’t a concept or anything like that – this is a real case that works and Lian Li will begin selling it, soon.

The case is called the PC-T1R and it’s pretty unique. It uses a mATX form factor motherboard which is pretty small, as far as motherboards go. You probably won’t be building an elite gaming machine in this thing. It also has support for housing your hard drive, optical drive and even has a wide back end for a power supply.

Notice in the picture how Lian Li has the wires carefully groomed. If you’re not good with cable management in your computer builds, this thing could look like some horrible. As mentioned, it’s a completely fully functioning computer

case, completely with on/off switch, etc.

Nothing on a release date, but the PC-T1R will be shipping in either red or black, and will cost €150. A little closer to reality, Lian Li also had a new ATX full tower case on display at CeBIT. The big full tower case is named the PC-8FU and features a hefty all-aluminum design and weighs in at 5.8kg (12.7 lbs). One notable thing about the PC-8FU chassis is that it has USB 3.0 ports in the case, in case your motherboard supports USB 3.0. No pricing or release information on the big PC-8FU.
