Wondering What Causes Explorer Excessive Memory Usage?

by Om on September 10, 2009

Sometimes, Explorer’s excessive memory usage may cause your system to freeze and if you try to kill the process via task manager, everything may disappear and you’re left with no other option, but to reboot. So, let us see what can actually cause Explorer excessive memory usage and possible remedies.

Common Reasons

Out of the abovementioned six common reasons behind the excessive memory usage of Microsoft Explorer, problems one, two, and four can be easily fixed in few seconds.

The Windows Explorer may start using excessive memory under these common conditions:

• Too many files on the desktop.
• Too many undeleted files in the recycle bin.
• Too many background processes running like Yahoo.

Messenger, MSN Messenger, multiple antivirus programs, firewalls, MySql, Tally, or other software packages that you may not recognize to be in running condition.

• Low disk space in the C-drive.
• Low virtual memory.
• Too many active bundled software, add-ons, plug-ins, etc.

Due to the excessive memory usage of Windows Explorer, the CPU usage and hence the efficiency of your computer may reduce drastically.

You may even come across situations when the CPU usage drops to forty percent or lower.

You may also receive warnings like “your system is critically low on resources” and “please save all your work and restart the system immediately.”

In such cases, even terminating the explorer.exe process in the task manager won’t help the cause. You should reboot the system and follow the below mentioned remedies to resolve this problem.
