Microsoft Teases with Say Goodbye to Laser

Posted on 27 August 2008

The image shown above is a promotion for a product launch event scheduled by Microsoft in Seattle on the 9th of September, 2008. The animation launched as a part of their campaign is available on their website.

When I first read the tagline, my first thoughts were laser printers. But hey, there is no inkjet mentioned and Microsoft doesn’t deal with printer hardware. So, it gotta be something else!

Thinking more on this teaser, it occurred to me that laser could be a part of an input device, like a wireless keyboard and mouse. I remembered the recent emergence of laser mice but, goodbye to laser?.

Microsoft has not divulged any other information except for the animation. Their wicked minds want us to hover over this tag line until its officially launched. What the heck, I decided to Google for answers…

No luck but several guesses. Many felt that Microsoft might introduce multi-touch which is currently being envisioned by another giant, Apple. There was an opinion that Microsoft is looking at introducing a mouse that has GPS functionality in it. GPS and mouse, naah!

From Wiki - Multi-touch (or multitouch) is a human-computer interaction technique and the hardware devices that implement it, which allow users to compute without conventional input devices (e.g., mouse, keyboard). Multi-touch consists of a touch screen (screen, table, wall, etc.) or touchpad, as well as software that recognizes multiple simultaneous touch points, as opposed to the standard touchscreen (i.e. computer touchpad, ATM), which recognizes only one touch point. This effect is achieved through a variety of means, including but not limited to: heat, finger pressure, high capture rate cameras, infrared light, optic capture, tuned electromagnetic induction and shadow capture.

Whatever the product may be, it will not fail to enthrall Microsoft fans like us. We will have to keep guessing and pondering over it, ‘coz the giant will deliver a full blooded blow only on the day of the reckoning.
