This list can go on and on and there is only word that is common, Google. Google is venturing into new horizons everyday. I do not miss the word “google” when I browse through my daily news. So, can Google take over the internet? Can it be the Microsoft of internet?
Google has an advantage that most companies don’t. Google is trusted by one and all. There might be a thousand services doing the same thing that Google does, but people prefer Google over everybody else. Let me quote an example. When Google calendar came out, people flocked the calendar website and there was news about it everywhere. Its a web calendar that could be shared and you could access it from anywhere. No big technology behind it yet people went crazy about it. There are similar programs with a better interface than Google doing the same for the past few years and yet Google gets the glory. Plaxo is the program that I use which integrates with my Outlook and it comes with calendar, notes, tasks and contacts. All my contacts are online and the software that attaches with Outlook downloads all the contacts and my calendar appointments for me. Yet, it is not popular, Google is.
The credit should go to the innovativeness of Google. They have come with concepts that would change the way internet works. Just to quote an example, Google hosting domain mails. Although they are providing the most important service, Google is making sure that their name propogates in every nook and corner on the internet.
There were some reports a few months back that Google would be releasing its own brand of computer, its operating system and a browser. Whether these reports are true or false, only time will reveal the answer.
If Google was to release their own computer or operating system, I have very little doubts that it will not succeed. Being the market leader, Google can call all the shots. But, Google doesn’t want to get to a point where the name gets diluted. The market leader needs to strategically move in a way that none of the products would flop. If the users lose trust in one product, it’s easy to lose trust in the whole brand.
