It takes a lot of BALLS to make a Video like this

by Abhinav Kaiser on May 13, 2006

This is a great video. You will understand / appreciate the title after you watch the video.

From the first Animusic DVD. Pipe Dream has been voted one of the 50 greatest animation projects ever (by 3D World). A group of percussion instruments perform music by way of metal balls that fly out from pipes.

If you get the DVD, also check out “Accoustic Curves”. It’s another really great song, even if the visuals aren’t quite as spectacular.

What the hell are you babbeling about? It takes BALLS to make this? It takes precision, good timing and a lot of animating.
Balls have honestly nothing to do with it.

Roz May 14, 2006 at 2:16 pm

Uh u do get the pun of ‘balls’ this video is showing u idiot..

Interesting video fun to watch if ur blowed

a May 14, 2006 at 2:53 pm

inconsistent. if you pay attention to other “instruments” which aren’t the main focus of the viewpoint camera, they aren’t making sounds at the correct times/registering the sounds. the main thing is the crash on the drum set.

blah May 14, 2006 at 3:33 pm

BALLS because if you didn’t notice every sound was being struct with a BALL. idiots…

well impressed!!!!

I’ve seen this elsewhere, but I have to say – excellent piece of animation. The timing required, the synchronization, the tune itself being excellent – just one hell of a presentation. I just wish it weren’t a Google video here, so that I could fullscreen it. :)

Steven May 18, 2006 at 5:06 pm

The ATI download page linked above has a link to an AVI version.

if i remember correctly i saw this video on TechTV a couple years ago before they merged with G4 and self-destructed.

Quoting what A said (comment number 7) The instraments are actually all pretty much dead on. The cymbal only looks inconsistant because it falls to a background effect. It is still there if you listen for it though. The timing may be a little shakey, but only by fractions of a second. And honestly you have to give the creators props for it, they did an excellent job.
Loved it!

Ken June 29, 2006 at 8:32 am

AWESOME !

Tora1188 July 20, 2006 at 7:04 am

To Joe,

If you listen to the commentary on the DVD itself, they say that the animations are actually driven by the music, and not the other way around. Essentially, whenever a MIDI note is played, it triggers the appropriate animation. For Pipe Dream, they had to actually make 3 layers of MIDI notes, one for the initial launch of the ball, the actual played note, and the after effect of the ball returning to the “catch” chute (or next instrument).

This method is used for ALL their animations. This way, all the animators ahvbe to make is an instrument that is animated for a given range of notes. That way, the instruments sue the computerized method of “Reading Sheet Music”

just my 2 cents.

PS: BUY THIS DVD. Stuff like this needs to be supported.

As a vibraphonist (yes, that’s a word, and yes, there was a vibraphone in the clip), I find this to be utterly amazing. I wish I had thought of it first!

PERCUSSION ROCKS!!! SO DO BALLS!!!! Yeah!

I love watching things like that combine different realms of knowledge: engineering, graphic design, and music. Truly an inspiring piece of work.

patel September 13, 2006 at 2:01 pm

fantastic job man…..

Michael October 9, 2006 at 6:58 pm

Interesting animation, but too bad the music is completely uninteresting. :-/

Chris Starling October 13, 2006 at 9:59 am

this animation rocked. literally. you have to appreciate the time, effort, and creativity it took to make something this detailed. As far as animations go, it is near perfect.

Tom November 13, 2006 at 1:56 pm

OMGZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ fantastic! The music is gr8, timing is gr8, and the idea of animating a music video is fantastic. I would never have thought of doing that in my life! Pure legend.

Surath February 15, 2007 at 1:39 pm

Is that a real time simulation…………………I dont think so….even if it is pre-rendered…it was great…nice piece of work…!!!!
