10 Reasons why you don’t need a Website

Here’s a Switch . . . Why you don’t need a Web Site?

Yeah, yeah, yeah . . . All the noise online about why you need a Web site, what will happen if you don’t get one, how your competitors will rule the roost if you don’t at the very least build your own site (Please don’t panic and do that!). Seems you can’t go anywhere on or off-line without someone trying to sell you a darned Web site! So, in my usual mischievous way, I thought I would put together an article of the reasons why to NOT get a site; a different albeit instigating slant on the very same information.

This article is provided as a courtesy to those who have too much on their plate already. They are too busy running around in emergency mode along with the rest of us to have to stop and make more decisions; have to review more choices that can increase their success ratio – let alone “deal” with technology. This way, next time you’re at a business gathering and or social event and the topic of your Web site comes up or rather the lack of having one; you’ll have more to say than. . . “I don’t have one” or “I don’t need one”. You’ll have valid reasons! So, I thought I would use the very popular top 10 list format to give you all the excuses you need.

1. You do not have the time. You are smart enough to know there is a time commitment required to be involved in interactive technology and you have no wiggle-room right now. There’s this weird time warp thing that happens when you get in front of a monitor – time seems to evaporate. Ask any of your friends already involved with technology – ask them about that “time warp thing” that happens when they get online and watch the smirk that moves across their face. They know what you are talking about. You simply don’t have time to dedicate to your business’ future right now.

2. Your “market” isn’t online. You just “know” that those in your target market are not online . . . yet. No sense getting out there now – the volume doesn’t warrant your staking a claim at this point. You’ll let your competitors get out there first and make all the mistakes.

3. You have too much business already. We all know what that’s like (or wish we had those kind of problems). You find it difficult to satisfy your business’ current demands off-line. Why generate even more business or position yourself for the future?

4. You do not want to gain the necessary skills and knowledge base. Only you know your own willingness to want to go through what seems to many an endless learning curve. So, why bother? You know you will need to get up to speed and then be prepared to move in whatever direction technology leads you. This requires an almost “in class everyday” mentality to ensure you remain as current as you can be. Nothing wrong with being honest about your lack of desire, patience or interest in having to learn to succeed, right?

5. You are not willing to do your due diligence. When you buy a car, you do your homework from checking history, pricing and fuel economy to warranties. You probably visit several online auto sites to compare data. You take the time to make sure you are making the best decision for you based on available information. Having a Web site and choosing whom to partner with for hosting, development and consulting is similar to putting together a science fair project! You know for a fact there are those companies out there who are willing to use what you don’t know to get into your wallet and you don’t want to take the time to identify the real pros from the “wannabes”. You have several friends and associates who gave their business image to so-called “Web designers” only to experience disaster. Just too much to think about!

6. You don’t want to spend money to do it right and continue to invest into the future. There are many levels of expense involved that need to be budgeted as with any other Business Expense. This could all be a fad after all and you’ve heard about all those free services that will let you get a site for almost nothing. Why spend more than you have to if you can do-it-yourself or get a site for free without having to budget additional resources in the future?

7. You don’t want to do this “Web thing” and would only get involved because that nagging feeling you have in the pit of your stomach tells you if you don’t you’ll regret it. (Don’t do it, don’t do it! That nagging feeling is actually telling you that you’re not prepared, informed or positioned to make these serious decisions.) You’ve lived this long without a Web site, why get one now?

8. You personality demands control, consistency and predictability with a dash of guarantee in your marketing efforts. Yikes! Not online. No consistency except that there isn’t any. No predictability ability. Control? How can you control what you do not understand? Sounds too frustrating and annoying!

9. Until you can find a Web partner, developer, consultant that you can trust – you’re going to keep looking. Those professionals are very few and far between. You won’t work with someone simply because they sound as though they know more than you and happen to be “around”, right?

10. I can’t take all this technology stuff and am simply going to ignore the whole darned thing. That’s your choice to make and you’re sticking by that because you can. ‘Nuff said.

Those with any level of success will share their horror stories, their most frustrating moments, the experience of their first success and ongoing challenges. Each will have that twinkle in their eye that only those who are truly participating in technology in a way that makes them feel more alive both professionally and personally will recognize.

This is the part where if you were in The IStudio you would notice the goose bumps forming on my arms. I really do get excited when I think about all the opportunity and potential there is out there literally for the taking when technology is practiced properly. It drives me insane that I don’t have enough time in the day to investigate it all! I am brutally aware of what I don’t know rather than the fact that some comment on my breadth of knowledge and experience. The Internet is like having an all-you-can-eat business buffet 24-7! It is really in each person’s sphere of possibility to succeed and thrive . . . if they choose.

At the same time, I have worked with many businesses who hopped online for all the wrong reasons. Their frustration and aggravation levels in dealing with what is necessary to produce results were times 10 compared to those who did so for all the right reasons, with reality being a big part of the conversation.

So practice repeating the reasons above as to why you don’t have a Web site. Stand in front of a mirror, keeping your shoulders back, head high with a tone of confidence. This way when the topic turns to Web sites and why don’t have one, you will “wow” your colleagues with these well thought out responses while impressing them with your realistic knowledge of why and who should get a Web site for their business. Some of your colleagues might even end up feeling a bit foolish for not following some of these rules themselves.
