Top Ten Dorky Computer Gadgets

Posted on 27 April 2006

Here are the top ten gadgets that caught my eye. It is not in any particular order, but there is poll though if you would be interested in voting…

1. Slingbox

From their website - ” There’s a new cool device for the TV: the Slingbox, which lets you watch your home television when you’re halfway around the world. Don’t worry if that business trip to Australia has inconveniently come just when Man U is playing Arsenal in London. With a Slingbox in the living room and an Internet-connected laptop or 3G mobile phone on the road, you can follow every live strike by Thierry Henry and Wayne Rooney just as if you were slumped into your favorite comfy chair in Highbury. ” Visit their website.

2. Stealth Switch

From thinkgeek’s website - “Feet have been a major factor in the course of human history. If it wasn’t for feet, so many great heroes of the past would have had to sit down or risk tipping over. The sound of feet is how you know when someone is approaching your cubicle and it is time to hurry and close the game running on your computer. Too many close calls can lead to unnecessary office stress.

The Stealth Switch is the answer. Quickly install the software and plug the hidden foot switch in (it goes either between the keyboard and your computer, or just into an available USB port) and you are safe. It hides in the shadows and just a light tap of your toes will let it work its magic. Based on your preferences, it can hide the current window, hide all windows, or hide all windows except for specified windows. Not just minimize, mind you, but totally erase from your screen. The Stealth Switch can also mute the sound, hide the taskbar, hide the desktop icons, and password protect the restore function. When the coast is clear, another quick tap and you are ready to frag in peace.”

3. Custom Made PC Case (Sculpture)

It is a PC case created by Katsuya Matsumura. This case is one in a series of original sculptures of his, and you can see the step by step explanation of how he creates them on Kat’s Land. Custom made cases cost between $1000 and $3000. You can see the making of such cases on this website.

4. The darumouse

mooou.jpg

From we make money not art - “Darumouse = Daruma + Mouse. Daruma being a round Japanese wish doll with no arms and legs, modelled after Bodhidharma and often used as a good-luck charm.

The larger darumouse has 6 buttons (left, right clicks; scroll up, down; forward, backward) and the smaller one has 4 (left, right clicks; scroll up, down). Darumouse can be operated in the air.

Users can also control the cursor by just tilting their darmouse.

The product is already available for purchase in Japan. But what’s interesting is that the manufacturer claims they can turn anything into a mouse providing that the physical shape/size allows it. They are even planning to sell made-to-order mouses: customer would send their favorite physical object to them and they would turn it into a mouse. The company would sell only the internal electronic components.”
